Outside the Box (2015) is showing at the RSA Annual Open Exhibition on the Mound in Edinburgh from tonight till 14 February 2016.

Video work Outside the Box (2015) will be screening throughout this year's Jazzfest, alongside performances by acclaimed musicians from around the world.  From tonight till 29 November, in Kolkata's celebrated Dalhousie Institute.

Filming commenced today on a new work, Ballygunge Phari.  Dedicated to the people and city of Kolkata, the production of this new piece forms the culmination of Paul Holmes's city residency as Indian Institute of Cultural Relations Senior Research Fellow 2015.

27.06.15 SYMPOSIUM DISCUSSES VIDEO ART AND CINEMA LANGUAGE

 

The opening of "Outside the Box: New video works by Paul Holmes" is being marked by a discussion of the relationship between these two moving image media, today at Studio 21, Kolkata.  Guest speakers include celebrated film makers and artists Suman Mukhopadhyay, Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, Anik Datta, Sourav Roy Chowdhury and Uma Ray.  Read more about the event here.

 

22.06.15 PREVIEW OF "OUTSIDE THE BOX" EXHIBITION

 

Read "Four Videos, Four Stories" by Chandrayee Ghosh here.  The exhibition was opened by British Deputy High Commissioner Scott Furssedonn-Wood, who said in his speech that "We are lucky to be able to welcome to Kolkata a British artist like Paul Holmes whose innovative work makes us see things in a different light, and changes the way we think about the world around us."

 

31.05.15 OUTSIDE THE BOX BOOK PUBLISHED BY MUTUS LIBER

 

Designed by Sean Martin, and featuring contributions from Haftor Medbøe and Rory Maclean.  This  artist's book complements the work of the same name and features as its centrepiece a revealing and imaginative essay by Louise Milne.  Published to coincide with the forthcoming exhibition at Studio 21 Kolkata, India.

 

16.05.15 SOLO EXHIBITION AT STUDIO 21

 

Collected video pieces The Persistence of Vision, These Measures are for Your Protection and Time Machine (all 2013) and Outside the Box (2015) will be shown together for the first time in solo show "Outside the Box: New video works by Paul Holmes" at Studio 21, Kolkata, from 19 June to 3 July.   This is the first all video art exhibition to be staged in the city, according to eminent newspaper The Statesman.

 

14.08.14 ICCR SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

 

Following Memory's Journey (2014),  his cross cultural exploration of the work of Robert Burns and Rabindranath Tagore, Paul Holmes has been invited to take up an Indian Council for Cultural Relations Senior Research Fellowship at Rabindra Bharati University and Kala Bhavan, West Bengal, in the summer of 2015.  The residency will include the production and exhibition of new and existing work, as well as research related to the topic of his sound piece.

New work Outside the Box follows the untamed and involuntary facial expressions of Haftor Medboe's jazz quartet as they rehearse their set for this year's Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival.

 

28.06.14 THE LOOP SHOWING AS PART OF GENERATION

 

Street Level Gallery, Glasgow, presents "Digital Play", a retrospective of the work of Wendy McMurdo, including our 2009 collaboration, The Loop.  The exhibition is part of  "Generation", a nationwide celebration of 25 years of contemporary art in Scotland.

 

24.05.14 MEMORY'S JOURNEY AT BURNS FESTIVAL

 

More than four hundred people came to see the work at the Old Feed Store, Bellisle Park this weekend.  The piece is listed in the Herald review as a high point of the Festival.

 

26.04.14 THE PERSISTENCE OF VISION SHOWING AS PART OF AYRSHIRE OPEN STUDIOS

 

This is the first public screening of the 2013 graphics-based video work.  It is screening alongside an exhibition of emerging practitioners curated by the artist, at  UWS, Ayr today and tomorow.

 

03.03.14 BENGAL AND SCOTLAND MEET IN NEWLY COMMISSIONED WORK

 

New sound work Memory's Journey has been commissioned by Director Jacqui Ross of the Burns an' a' That Festival in Ayr.  The work will feature the voice talents of Taylor Wilson (also the vocal consultant for the piece), Payal Debroy, Andy Fraser, and Soumya Dutta Roy.   The piece is a response to resonances between the work of Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore and Robert Burns and is preoccupied with the movement, sharing and conflict of ideas across different cultures.  The Festival runs from the 23-26 May.
